Frequently asked questions about fly screens for Nuremberg and the region

What are the advantages of using fly screens?

Protection from insects and arachnids

Professional fly screen elements reliably protect entrances from insects and arachnids. This is because the elements are adapted to the respective entrance with millimeter precision and fixed light-tight in/on the frame.

Protection from pollen

Special fly screen pollen protection fabrics also filter approx. 90 % of plant pollen from the air and thus also protect the indoor air for pollen allergy sufferers.

Protection from rodents and bats

Stainless steel fly screen mesh also protects entrances from rodents (mice, rats, etc.) and bats. This highly resistant mesh can withstand rodent bites and thus provides an impenetrable barrier to the interior for many animals.

Protection for pets

Special fly screen pet fabric resists scratching attacks from pets and also protects against a cat, for example, getting outside through the window from the inside. In addition, no cat can get in from the outside.

Dirt/dust reduction

With special close-meshed fly screen fabrics (1.05 x 1.05 mm), even coarser dirt and dust particles are filtered out of the air. Some fly screen owners report that they notice less dust pollution in the rooms after installing the fly screen elements.

Which building entrances/openings can be protected with fly screens?

Almost every type of door, window, skylight and cellar light well.

What types of fly screen elements are there?

The following components are available for protecting door entrances:

Hinged fly screen doors

The hinged door is easy to open and can also close automatically, depending on the equipment. The door can be installed to open either inwards or outwards. The door can be hinged on both sides.

Sliding fly screen systems (sliding doors)

Sliding doors are particularly suitable for protecting large terrace and balcony entrances as well as conservatories. Thanks to the very stable frame elements, the sliding door system can also be manufactured without cross bars for an uninterrupted view and an elegant design. The sliding system is smooth and quiet to operate.

Fly screen sliding window system

Sliding windows are also ideal if you often want to pass things through a window and want reliable protection from insects. The insect screen sliding window system ensures an undisturbed view and is almost inconspicuous with its elegant design. The sliding window system is smooth and quiet to operate. The structure and function of the system are the same as those of the fly screen sliding door systems.

Pleated fly screen window systems

Like roller blind systems, pleated window systems are ideal for windows that you want to protect from insects and through which you occasionally want to pass something. This is because the pleated function allows you to push the fly screen back into itself at any time to save space and only pull it out again when required.

What materials are professional fly screen elements made from?

The main support material for the most common elements (doors, window frames and sliding systems) is extruded aluminum. This is characterized by its low weight and durability. The fly screen fabrics are mainly made of fibreglass, polyester and plastics, which are attached to the fly screen element frames under tension using a plastic piping (UV-stabilized PVC). Depending on the element, various fittings are also used, which are usually made of stainless steel. For example, the hooks for attaching window frames or the hinge pins for fly screen doors.

What different materials are fly screen fabrics made from?

There are a variety of different fly screen fabrics available on the market. The mesh materials used include aluminum, plastic-coated (PVC) fiberglass, plastic-coated (PVC) polyester, polypropylene plastic and stainless steel. The fabric threads of the fiberglass, polyester and polypropylene fabrics are welded mesh-tight at the contact points (thread intersections). This prevents the mesh from tearing further in the event of minor damage to the mesh.

Application examples of the various fly screen fabrics

How fine are fly screen fabrics?

The thread and wire thicknesses vary from approx. 0.14 millimetres to approx. 0.6 millimetres, depending on the material and application. The mesh widths of the fabrics range from approx. 1.05 mm x 1.05 mm to approx. 2.5 mm x 1.6 mm.

What should I bear in mind when ventilating with fly screens?

On average, most fly screen fabrics have an open screen area of approx. 70 %. This means that the mesh allows approx. 30 % less light and air to pass through building openings. It is therefore advisable to ventilate a little longer (approx. 30 %) compared to shock ventilation without fly screen elements in order to achieve a similar air exchange effect.

Which fly screen fabric color is recommended?

Various colors are available for fly screen fabrics. Mostly the colors white, grey, black and natural stainless steel are offered for use in the fly screen elements. Professional, custom-made elements are predominantly covered with black fabrics. This is because the black color reflects the least light and is therefore the least noticeable. Soiling such as small deposits are also least noticeable in black fabric. Black fly screen fabrics are therefore the most transparent and require the least cleaning.

How are fly screen elements attached?

The following methods have proven to be reliable for attaching professional, custom-made fly screens:

Screwing

The elements (usually fly screen doors on balcony/terrace door frames) are screwed on using approx. 3-5 mm thick screws (galvanized or stainless steel). Or screwed into the side of the wall reveal with approx. 4-6 mm thick screws (galvanized or stainless steel).

Bonding

With professional mounting tapes (e.g. 3M VHB), elements can be permanently attached to the outer frame without drilling holes. This means that no door frames or walls need to be drilled. And for a more appealing design, no drill hole covers need to be attached to the glued-on elements (mainly fly screen doors).

Hook in

With special hook systems, fly screen solutions for windows in particular can be easily hooked into the window frames in most cases. This allows the fly screen elements(window tensioning frames and window roller blind systems) to be fitted and removed quickly and easily.

Clamping

A spring pin system can be used to clamp fly screen window frames into wooden windows. This allows the fly screen to be quickly and easily removed from the window and just as easily reinserted into the window.

Description of the fastening methods

How inconspicuous can fly screens be?

Professionally custom-made fly screen elements can be integrated very inconspicuously into building facades thanks to precisely matched slim aluminum profiles, which are available in almost any desired color and the particularly fine/transparent fly screen fabric.

How sustainable/long-lasting are professional fly screens?

The average durability of the most common fly screen elements (doors, tensioning frames and sliding systems) is approx. 15-20 years. If, for example, the fabric becomes brittle/damaged after this time, the elements can be inexpensively re-stretched. Professional fly screen solutions are therefore very sustainable and resource-saving compared to “cheap” DIY store products.

How are fly screen elements maintained?

The fly screen elements are maintenance-free.

With pleated blind systems, it is important that the bottom guide rail is kept free of dust and dirt. The use of a vacuum cleaner with a crevice nozzle attachment or with the bare suction tube is well suited for this. After some time, you can also spray some silicone spray into the bottom guide rail to make the pleated flyscreen system easier to operate. This reduces the friction between the sliding element and the bottom track.

How are fly screen elements cleaned?

The frame elements can be cleaned of dirt with water and a little washing-up liquid or with simple household cleaners.

If necessary, clean the fabric with a damp cloth (use cold water only). The fabric can also be swept off with a soft and clean hand brush. For stubborn dirt on/in the fabric (e.g. grease or bird droppings), a little detergent can be added to the cold water.

If there are insects in the fabric, please remove them as soon as possible, otherwise birds may try to pick them out.

Can fly screens be used all year round?

Yes, professional fly screen elements are made with materials that can withstand Western European summer and winter temperatures. This means that the fly screens can remain in use all year round.

What are the requirements for the installation of professional fly screen elements?

For the use of fly screens and unrestricted functioning of the complete door/window system, a certain contact surface and space between the door/window frame and any roller blind is required. This required space varies depending on the fly screen system/element. In some cases, the space in the window/door rebate can also be used as a support/insertion surface for the fly screen element.
